A condor is a very large bird from the high mountains of South America — the . There is also a California condor in the United States. It is a vulture: it does not hunt live animals the way an eagle does. It finds animals that are already dead and eats them. That sounds ugly, but in nature this is clean-up work, and the bird’s almost-bald head helps it stay cleaner while it feeds. An adult can spread its wings about three metres and ride warm air for a long time with almost no flapping. People sometimes call any giant high-flying bird a condor, though strictly the name belongs to these New World vultures. You will not see one in Taiwan; you meet the word in nature films and in stories about saving the California condor, which came very close to disappearing.
組成From Spanish cóndor, from Classical Quechua kuntur, a language of the Andes, where the bird lives. The t sound became d in the coastal variety of Quechua.
