A condom is a thin rubber (or similar) cover a man wears over his penis during sex. It has two jobs: to help stop a baby from being made, and to help stop some diseases from passing between people. There are also condoms made for other kinds of sex; the idea is the same — a barrier.
It is a normal, necessary word. Doctors, sex education, and the packet in a shop all use it. Some people feel shy saying it; that is why friends and shops may use other names. None of that makes the word dirty — it makes it a word some people whisper, which is different.
Nobody is sure where the English word came from. There are many guesses. One is an old Italian word for a kind of glove. Treat that as a maybe, not a fact. What you can stand behind is what it is for.
