A condiment is something you add to food to give it a special taste — not the meal itself, but the extra. Salt, pepper, ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, vinegar, sauce, : you shake it, pour it, or dip food into it. Some condiments are a powder, some are a liquid or a thick sauce.
In everyday talk, people often just name the bottle (“Pass the ketchup”) rather than say condiment. You meet the word more on labels, menus, and in slightly careful or textbook English. In some places a “condiment” table is a little row of pickles, chutneys, or oils sitting beside the main food.
Though actually, the old idea was not only “make it tasty” but also “season, pickle, preserve” — helping food keep, or giving it a sharp, lasting taste.
