You do something condescendingly when the way you do it shows you think you are better, smarter, or more important than the other person. It is the how: a slow voice, a little smile, a pat-on-the-head in words. The feeling in the room is the same as with — nobody wants to be spoken to like this, and the word is used to show that dislike. You will hear it with verbs of speaking and looking: talk condescendingly, smile condescendingly, explain condescendingly. It belongs to careful, grown-up English rather than playground talk, but the idea itself is easy: the manner talks down.
