Compunction is a feeling that you should not do something because it is bad or wrong — a little stab of conscience. Though actually, you will hear it most when the feeling is missing: he had no compunction about lying means he lied and did not feel bad at all. Without compunction means without a second thought, and without guilt. It is a rather word, a little old. Friends would say I felt bad about it or I didn't care. If you do feel compunction, you pause; the feeling is trying to stop your hand.
