Two things are complementary when they go well together, and each one makes the other one better or more complete — like a scarf that is complementary to a coat, or two skills that complement each other on a team. It is also used in science for things that fit together exactly, like complementary colors (colors that look strong next to each other) or complementary angles (two angles that add up to a right angle). This word looks and sounds almost exactly like 'complimentary', which means free, or means giving praise — they are very easy to mix up, even for native speakers.
