Complaisance is the wish — or the habit — of doing what will please other people. You give way, you say yes, you shape yourself around what they want. It can sound polite and kind, but it can also sound too soft: a person full of complaisance may never push back, even when they should. This is a rare, rather old-fashioned, bookish noun. You will meet it in novels and careful essays more than in speech. People today would more often talk about being eager to please, too agreeable, or always going along. Though actually, do not let the spelling trick you: this is not complacency. Complacency is being too pleased with yourself. Complaisance is being too ready to please others. They look like cousins, and they do share an old “please” idea, but English split them, and mixing them up changes the whole meaning.
