To compartmentalize is to divide something into separate areas or groups — to put each piece in its own box. You can compartmentalize a warehouse (food here, tools there) or a project (each team owns one slice). English speakers very often use it about the mind: to compartmentalize your feelings is to keep one part of life from touching another, on purpose. Some people think that is healthy; some think it is a way of not facing things. It is more formal than “keep them separate.” British spelling often uses -ise: compartmentalise. Though actually it does not always mean you built real walls; the “walls” can be only in how you think.
