A commonwealth is a group of countries or states joined together for shared benefit or history. Most students will meet it as 'the Commonwealth' — the group of countries once part of the British Empire, like Canada, Australia, and India, now loosely connected. It can also mean a self-governing political community in general — some U.S. states (Massachusetts, Virginia) officially call themselves a 'commonwealth' instead of a 'state', which is just an old legal name and doesn't change what they are.
