Commonality is the fact that two or more people or things share something — a feeling, a problem, a bit of history, a way of working. You can talk about the commonality between two cultures, or the commonalities (plural) that a group has. It is a rather formal, essay-and-meeting word; in casual talk people say what we have in common. In factories and software it also means “we use the same parts or the same design in different products,” which is a stretch of the same idea: sharing.
