To commiserate is to show someone you feel sorry with them — not because you caused the trouble, but because you understand it hurts. You sit with their bad news. You say “That’s hard” and you mean it. People commiserate with a friend who failed a test, lost a match, or had a rough week at work. It is a little more formal than “feel sorry for you,” though actually friends do use it, often with a half-smile: “Shall we commiserate over coffee?” It is about sharing the sad feeling, not about fixing the problem.
