When two things are commensurate, they match each other in size, quality, or how long they last. The pay matches the work. The punishment matches the wrong. The time you get matches the size of the job. You see this word a lot in serious writing about jobs and money: “a salary commensurate with experience.” You almost never hear it in the night market. Though actually, people sometimes stretch it to mean “fair” or “enough” — “Is the reward commensurate?” — when the stricter idea is that the two sides sit on the same scale, not just that one side is big. There is a rare verb too, but almost only meet the adjective.
組成Latin com- (“together, with”) + mēnsūrātus, from mēnsūra (“measure”). The picture is “measured together” — two things that can sit on the same scale. The English adjective ending -ate is on the end.
