A commandment is one of the big rules in the Bible that God gives people about how they must live. When people say the Ten Commandments (often with capital letters), they mean that famous set of ten. You almost never use commandment for an ordinary order from a boss or a teacher — that is just a command. The word sounds old and serious. You mainly meet it in religion and history, or when someone is talking in a heavy, moral way, as if a rule were holy.
