Combustion is the scientific word for burning — the fast chemical reaction where a fuel meets oxygen, gives off heat and light, and turns into new substances like smoke or ash. You'll meet it most in science class and in the phrase "internal combustion engine," which is the kind of engine most petrol cars use — fuel burns inside small chambers to push the car forward.
