If someone is in a coma, they have been unconscious for a long time, usually after a serious injury or illness. They do not wake when you speak or touch them, the way a sleeping person would. Doctors watch them in hospital; some people come out of a coma, and some do not. We say in a coma and come out of a coma. It is a careful medical word. People sometimes joke that they were “in a coma” on the sofa, meaning only very tired — that is not the real meaning. Though actually, a vegetative state is not the same thing either: the body may still show sleep-and-wake cycles. A coma is deeper and quieter than that.

Borrowed from Ancient Greek κῶμα.

組成Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek κῶμα (kôma), “deep sleep.” (A different coma — the fuzzy head of a comet — comes from Greek for hair. That is another word.)
