In old European plays, Columbine is a young woman on the stage: she is the one Harlequin loves. Harlequin is the comic in the diamond-pattern suit; Columbine is usually the clever servant girl — bright, teasing, and hard to fool. You meet her in the old Italian comic theatre and later in English pantomime, not in ordinary talk. People sometimes think of the flower of the same name, which is fair, because the two names share a root; this sense, though, is the woman in the love plot, not the plant. The name comes from Latin for a dove, a gentle bird used as a pretty picture for that girl.

組成From Latin columbinus, from columba, “dove” (and from Middle English columbyne / Old French columbin). The flower of the same spelling was named from Latin colombina herba, “dove-like plant”; the stage character wears the dove name too.
