To colorize something is to add colour to a film, or sometimes a photograph, that was first made in black and white. A studio might colorize an old movie so that new viewers find it easier to watch. It is a media and technical word. You would not say you colorize your homework with coloured pens, or colorize a wall with paint — you just colour those. The American spelling is colorize; British English may write colourize. The thing you end up with is a colorized film; the process of doing it is colorization.
