Colorado is a state in the west of the United States, mostly in and around the Rocky Mountains. Denver is the capital. is famous for skiing; Boulder is known for its university. People go there for snow sports in winter and for hiking and cooler air in summer. The name comes from Spanish colorado, meaning “red,” “ruddy,” or “coloured,” usually from the look of some rivers that carry a lot of earth. It is a place name, so it always starts with a capital C. When you say it, the strong beat is near the end: colo-RA-do. There is also a Colorado River; the state name and the river name belong to the same Spanish word.
