A collider is a huge scientific machine. It makes tiny pieces of atoms race extremely fast and smash into each other, so scientists can see what comes out and learn how matter is built. The famous ones are particle colliders — the Large Hadron Collider in Europe is the one news stories name. This is a specialist word from physics, not a word for two cars hitting each other. Though actually, the everyday verb collide is the close cousin: the machine is named for that crashing, only here the “crash” is planned, tiny, and watched by instruments. You would not call a traffic accident a collider.
