Cold-calling is when someone telephones you, or comes to your door, without you asking them to, and tries to sell you something. You have never met. “Cold” is not the weather. In sales talk, cold means there is no warm link yet — you are not an old customer, and nobody introduced you. A single try is a cold call; the job of making those tries all day is cold-calling. Companies still do it, though many places now have rules against unwanted sales calls, and a lot of people find it , so the word often carries a little dislike. You will meet it in work English more than in friendly chat.
cold-calling 指在沒有被要求的情況下，主動打電話或上門推銷。這裡的 cold 不是「冷」，而是指雙方還沒有任何熱絡的關係，沒有熟客，也沒有人介紹。單次的嘗試叫「a cold call」，整天做這件事就是 cold-calling。因為很多人覺得它很煩，這個詞通常帶一點反感，多見於工作場合的英文。
