Cold-calling is when someone telephones you, or comes to your door, without you asking them to, and tries to sell you something. You have never met. “Cold” is not the weather. In sales talk, cold means there is no warm link yet — you are not an old customer, and nobody introduced you. A single try is a cold call; the job of making those tries all day is cold-calling. Companies still do it, though many places now have rules against unwanted sales calls, and a lot of people find it , so the word often carries a little dislike. You will meet it in work English more than in friendly chat.
