Coir is the rough, hairy fibre that sits on the outside of a coconut, between the hard shell and the green skin. People twist it into rope, mats, doormats, and hanging baskets for plants. It does not rot easily in water, which is why wet floors and garden pots have used it for a long time. You will meet it on product labels and in gardening shops more than in story books. It is a material word, like wool or cotton — a thing, not an action.
