Coinage has two main meanings. The first is about money: coinage is the coins that a country makes and uses, or the whole system of making coins. The second meaning is about language: coinage is the act of inventing a brand-new word, or the new word itself — for example, 'selfie' was once a coinage. This second meaning is common in articles about language.
