Cogitation is the thinking — the slow, careful turning of an idea in the mind — or sometimes the thought that comes out of it. It is a noun, even though the idea is first taught as “to think carefully.” You use it in formal or English: “after much cogitation,” “lost in cogitation.” In ordinary talk, people say “after a lot of thought” or “after thinking it over.” It can sound heavy, or even a little funny, if you use it for a small choice, like which sandwich to buy. Writers sometimes use the plural, cogitations, for a person’s thoughts, but that is rare now.

組成A learned Latin-style noun from Medieval Latin cogitatio, cogitationis; English once also had an older French-shaped form (Middle English cogitacioun), and the Latin one likely took its place. Far back it is cōgitātus + -iō, from Latin cōgitō (“to turn over in the mind; think, consider”), from con- (together) + agitō (to keep driving).
