A coffin is the long box a dead person is placed in. The body may then be buried in the ground, or the coffin may go into the fire in a — so the box is not only for burial, even though many first picture a grave. It is a serious, neutral word. You will hear it in news about accidents and in talk about funerals. American English often uses casket for a similar box, especially a more finished, rectangular one; coffin is the older general word, and in some places it still suggests the traditional six-sided shape. Though actually, in everyday speech many people use the two words as if they were the same. There is a rare verb to coffin (to put someone in a coffin), but you almost never need it.
組成From a Greek word for a basket, borrowed into Latin and then French, and into English. It once meant a basket or a box; later it settled on the funeral box. Same ultimate source as coffer.
