A medicine that eases pain and can also quiet a dry cough. It is made from the poppy, in the same family of drugs as , though actually it is milder, and doctors still put it in tablets and cough syrup. In many places you need a prescription. It can make you sleepy, and too much is dangerous, so it is not a sweet you grab like an everyday headache pill. Chemists took the name from French codéine, built on an old Greek word for the poppy’s head, plus -ine, the ending many medicine names carry. You say it KO-deen.
