The habit of spending a lot of time at home, where you feel relaxed and comfortable, instead of going out. Films, snacks, soft clothes, the door shut. An American writer on future trends, Faith Popcorn, gave English this sense in 1981: people pulling back into a private nest. It is a choice about comfort, not the same as hiding because you are afraid — though people mix those up, and the silk-moth picture sits underneath both. The word can sound a bit 1980s or like marketing talk; many people would just say staying in. After a long week, cocooning can be wise. As a whole way of life, some say it leaves you lonely.
