A cockamamie story, plan, or excuse is one that does not hold together — it sounds silly, made-up, or too messy to believe. It is American, informal, and a little comic; you say it when you are rolling your eyes, not when you are writing a report. “That’s a cockamamie excuse” means I do not buy it. You may also see the spelling cockamamy. It almost always sits in front of a noun (a cockamamie idea), rather than standing alone. Younger Americans still use it, but it can sound a bit old-sitcom; British speakers would more often say ridiculous, , or cobbled-together. Though actually it is not as strong as crazy: the picture is “this does not make sense”, not “this person is ill”.
