A cobra is a poisonous snake of Africa or Asia. When it feels threatened, it can lift the front of its body and spread the loose skin of its neck into a wide hood, so it looks bigger. The bite is dangerous: poison goes in through the . People say poisonous in everyday English; strictly the harm comes from venom in the bite. Some cobras, like the king cobra, are very large. The hood is the picture most people mean, though not every snake is a cobra.
