A cobblestone is a small, roundish stone set into the ground to make a hard road, especially in the past. Many stones sit tight together so carts and feet have something solid to travel on. The surface is strong but uneven, so it shakes a bike or a car. Today most new roads use a smooth black surface instead, but old streets and squares often still show cobblestones.
