Coalescence is the joining of separate things until they become one. Two groups, two plans, two drops of oil, even two sounds in a word — if they grow together so fully that you no longer see them as separate, that joining is coalescence. It is a careful, rather formal word: you meet it in science, news, and school writing more than in chat. Everyday English usually just says they came together or they merged. Scientists like it for the slow joining of drops or particles into one bigger mass. Though actually, this is a noun — the name of the process, and sometimes of the result. The verb is coalesce. It does not mean a loose crowd standing near each other; the pieces have to become one.
