A co-op is a cooperative: a shop, farm, housing block, or other business that the members own together, and that is meant to serve those members rather than outside bosses. You might join a food co-op to buy rice and fruit as a group, or live in a housing co-op where the people in the building make the rules. In Britain, “the Co-op” is also a well-known chain of small supermarkets; older people say “I’m just going to the Co-op” the way others say “the supermarket”. In games, co-op means you play on the same side as a friend, not against them, and people even use it as a loose verb: “Shall we co-op this?” The word is a of cooperative, so it feels informal. You will see co-op, Co-op, and sometimes . Though actually a chicken (a box for hens) is a different word, and co-opt (with a t) is different again: that one means to pull someone into your group, sometimes so they stop arguing with you.
