In the old Greek stories, Clytemnestra is the wife of Agamemnon, the king who leads the Greeks to the war at Troy. While he is away, she takes another man. When Agamemnon comes home, she murders him — in the famous play, in his bath, caught in a cloth. She says she is paying him back: he had killed their daughter Iphigenia to get a wind for the ships. Later their son Orestes kills her, because the old story says a son must pay back his father’s death. So the tale is a dark family knot: a wife who kills a husband, a son who kills a mother, and a long argument about which killing is worse. You meet her in Greek plays, and in later poems and operas. The name comes into English from Latin Clytaemnestra, and that from Ancient Greek Κλυταιμνήστρα (Klutaimnḗstra).
