Clwyd was a county in north-east Wales — a stretch of land with its own local government, not a city. People used the name on letters, road signs, and maps for about twenty years from the 1970s. Then Wales redrew its map. The law that ended Clwyd was passed in 1994, and the new counties took over in 1996. Most of the old county became Flintshire and Denbighshire; Wrexham became its own place, and a piece went into Conwy. So the tidy line “it was split into two counties” is a little tidier than the real map. You still meet the name in older addresses, on hospitals and papers, and in talk from people who grew up with it. Say it roughly like “KLOO-id,” not “CL-wid.” It is a Welsh name.
