A clothesline is a long thin rope, usually in a garden or on a balcony, that you hang wet clothes on so the air and sun can dry them. You the washing to the line and leave it. In some places people still do this every week; in others a machine dryer has taken its place, but the word is still ordinary. It is a simple compound: the line is for clothes.
