A closeout is a sale whose job is to get the last of the goods out of the shop . The shop is not trying to make a normal profit; it wants the things gone — last season’s clothes, a line they will not make again, stuff that has sat too long. You will see “closeout price” on a tag in American shops. In British English people more often say clearance, or closing-down sale when the whole shop is shutting for good. A closeout does not mean the shop is locking its doors for the night; it means this stock is being closed out.
