The clitoris is a small, very sensitive part of a woman’s external sex organs. For most women it is the main place that can bring sexual pleasure when it is touched with care. The bit you can see is only the glans — a small bud of tissue at the top of the inner folds of skin, where the meet. Though actually the whole organ is larger than that visible tip: inside the body it continues as tissue that wraps around the vagina, which is why it is not “just a button on the surface”. It is a normal body part, like an or a ; there is nothing rude about the word in a health or science class, though people may lower their voice in casual talk because sex is private. In everyday English some people avoid the word and speak vaguely; in doctor’s English and in good sex education, clitoris is the clear name. It is not the vagina (the canal inside) and not the (the whole outer area).
組成English took it from a Latin medical form clitoris in the 1500s, and that came from Greek kleitoris. Scholars think the Greek is tied to a verb meaning to sheathe or shut, because this part sits covered by small folds of skin. A related Greek noun could also mean a key or latch — the old wooden peg used to close a door. Some older medical books offer a different Greek story about tickling; that one is much less sure, so it is better left aside.
