    A clique is a small group of people who stick tightly together and keep others out. They share jokes, plans, and power, and if you are not in, you feel it. The word is almost never a compliment: it says the group thinks it is special, and that this is unfair or . You hear it about school friend groups, office in-crowds, clubs, and sometimes a little circle inside a party or a church. It is a little formal on the page, but people do say it in speech when they are . Though actually a close group of friends is not automatically a clique — friends can be warm and still open. Clique is the closed kind, the “us, not you” kind. In British English the usual sound is like “kleek”; some American speakers say it more like “click”. You will also meet the adjective for a place full of such groups.

組成Borrowed from French clique. The French word is thought to have started as a sound-word, like a click or a clack. In French it was probably mixed with claque — a hired group paid to clap in a theatre — though that mixing may have happened in French, not later in English.
