Clip-clop is the sound a horse makes when its hooves hit a hard road or courtyard — one short beat, then the next: clip, clop, clip, clop. English made the word by copying the noise. You will find it in children’s books, in stories, and when someone is painting a scene with words. It can be a noun (‘the clip-clop of hooves’) or a verb (‘the horse clip-clopped down the street’). It is informal and a little playful. People do not use it in serious reports. Though actually, writers sometimes borrow it for any similar two-beat tapping, but the horse on a hard surface is the home meaning.
