A climb-down is when you stop holding a strong position and admit you were wrong, or at least that you cannot win. British newspapers love this word, especially about politicians: they promised one thing, then they had a climb-down. The picture is someone standing high and proud, then having to come down. It is not about real climbing, ladders, or mountains. It is slightly informal, very common in news, and often a little for the person who does it — people talk about a ‘ climb-down.’ Americans more often say back down.
