Cleveland is a city in the north of the US state of Ohio, on Lake Erie. People far away often know it for one famous building: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a museum of popular music. It grew as a port and factory city — steel, ships, trains — and later had harder years when a lot of that work went away, like other cities around the Great Lakes. It still has big sports teams, and people who live there are proud of it in a stubborn, local way. Though actually, Cleveland is also an old place name in England, and the name is built like cliff + land: land by the cliffs. The Ohio city wears that English name. There was a US president called Grover Cleveland too; that is a man’s name, not this city. When Americans say Cleveland with nothing extra, they almost always mean the Ohio one.
