A clementine is a small, sweet fruit in the orange family, close to a mandarin. The skin comes off easily, the pieces split , and many have few or no seeds, so people often give them to children. Shops sell them in the cooler months. The name comes from a French missionary, Clément Rodier, who is said to have first grown this kind. It is not named because the fruit is “merciful.” Though actually, in casual talk many people just say orange or mandarin for any small fruit whose skin peels off easily. A clementine is a particular kind.
