Clemency is mercy from someone who has the power to punish. After a crime, a president, a governor, a king, or sometimes a court may grant clemency: they forgive, they cut the sentence, or they let the person go. You meet the word in news about prisons and pardons, and in history. It is formal and serious. A friend can forgive you; that is not clemency. Only someone in office can grant it. People speak of an act of clemency or a plea for clemency. Though actually, it does not always mean a full pardon. Sometimes the person still has a record, but the punishment is made lighter.

組成From Latin clēmentia, mercy or mildness. English once also had clemence from Old French, from the same Latin word; clemency is the form that stayed.
