A clef is the sign at the start of a stave — the five lines of written music. It tells you which notes live on which lines, so you know how high or low the music is.

A clefclef is the sign at the start of a stave是五線譜開頭的那個符號 the five lines of written music五線譜就是寫樂譜用的五條線 It tells you which notes live on which lines它告訴你哪些音符住在哪條線上 so you know how high or low the music is讓你知道音樂的音高

The two you will meet first are the treble clef (the swirly one, often for higher notes, or the right hand on a piano) and the bass clef (the one that looks a bit like a with two dots, for lower notes). There are others, such as the alto clef, but meet those later.

The two you will meet first你最先會遇到的兩種 are the treble clef是高音譜號 (the swirly one, often for higher notes, or the right hand on a piano)(那個彎彎繞繞的符號,常用在較高的音,或鋼琴的右手部分) and the bass clef還有低音譜號 (the one that looks a bit like a comma with two dots, for lower notes)(那個看起來有點像逗號加兩個點的符號,用在較低的音) There are others, such as the alto clef還有其他的,像是中音譜號 but learners meet those later但學習者比較晚才會遇到

The word came into English from French, and before that from Latin clavis, a key — it unlocks the pitch of the notes.

The word came into English from French這個字是從法文進入英文的 and before that from Latin clavis, a key再更早則來自拉丁文 clavis,意思是「鑰匙」 it unlocks the pitch of the notes它就像是打開音符音高的鑰匙

Though actually, when English speakers talk about the key of a piece of music, that key is a different word with a different history. The two ideas sit near each other, but they are not the same family.

Though actually不過其實 when English speakers talk about the key of a piece of music當英語使用者說一首曲子的 key(調) that key is a different word with a different history那個 key 是完全不同的字,有不同的來歷 The two ideas sit near each other這兩個概念雖然靠得很近 but they are not the same family但並不是同一個字的家族
