To cleanse something means to clean it very thoroughly, especially to make it free of dirt or bad things. You will most often meet this word on skin and beauty products — a 'cleansing lotion' or 'facial cleanser' washes dirt and oil off your face. People also use it for anything that is being made 'pure' again, like 'a cleansing breath' (a deep breath that helps you feel calmer). It sounds a little more gentle and caring than the plain word 'clean' — a shop sells 'cleansing' products, not 'cleaning' products, when it wants that softer feeling.
- cleancleanse probably comes from the same Old English root as clean
