It also hints at character — the kind of young man (it is used of men far more than of women) who looks as if he follows the rules and would please a parent or a boss. News and films like it for soldiers, students, and people who “do not look the type.” Though actually, it only talks about the look. Clean-cut is the opposite of rough or , not a test of a good life. A tidy face can hide a messy one. The word feels a little American and a little old-fashioned; you still hear it, but it is not hip street talk.
