Classification is the act of putting things into groups, so each thing sits with the others that belong with it. You look at a plant, an animal, a book, a problem at work, and you say: this kind, not that kind. Scientists do this a lot, and so do libraries, shops, and computers. People also use the word for the result, not only the doing — “a classification of birds” can mean the list or system you end up with. Though actually, offices stretch it further: classification can mean how secret a paper is, and who is allowed to see it. That is a special, official use. The everyday core is still sorting things into the right boxes. It sounds a little formal; in speech people often just say sorting or .
