Clapboard is the overlapping wooden boards that cover the outside of a house, each one sitting a little over the one below so rain runs off. Americans talk about clapboard houses a lot; British speakers more often say weatherboard. One board is a clapboard; the whole skin of the wall is clapboard too. There is also a verb, to clapboard a building, meaning to cover it this way, though the noun is what you will usually see. Though actually, film people sometimes say clapboard for the board that snaps shut before a take — that object is more carefully called a clapperboard. Same look on the page, different thing in the world. And many Americans do not say clap-board clearly: they say something closer to “clabberd”.

組成From Middle English clapholt, a partial translation of Middle Low German or Middle Dutch klappholt (“barrel stave”), from klappen (“to crack”) + holt (“wood”). Later, holt was swapped for English board.
