To clamber is to get somewhere the hard way, using your hands and your feet, because the place is steep, awkward, or has no proper path. You clamber over rocks, up a muddy bank, into the back of a truck, over a wall. It is slower than a clean climb, and it often looks a little : you pull, scramble, and catch your weight. Children clamber; walkers clamber; a cat can clamber onto a shed. Mountaineers more often just climb. You can also use it as a noun: a clamber over the rocks means that awkward climb itself. Informal to neutral spoken English — a doing word, not a grand one.

Scholars do not all agree after that: it may come from an old past tense of climb, or from an old Germanic verb of the same kind. Scots has clammer; Low German has similar climb-words. The noun (a clamber) comes from the verb.
