Citibank is a very large American bank. Its main offices are in New York City, and it has branches and offices in many countries, so and big companies meet the name far from the United States. People often it to Citi. It is part of a bigger company called Citigroup. The name hides an older one: the bank used to be called First National City Bank — “City” pointing at New York — and Citibank is a form of that earlier name. In Taiwan you will see its signs as 花旗銀行; that is not a translation of “Citi,” but the name people here actually use for this American bank (花旗 was an old way of talking about the United States’ flag). It is a proper name. You do not say “a citibank” for just any bank in a city.
