A Cinderella is a person, team, place, or thing that has been left in the corner — ignored, given less money, less praise, less time — while others were treated as the main event. English took the name from the fairy-tale girl who sat in the ashes while her sisters went to the dance, so the word still carries that picture: unpaid work, no invitation, then sometimes a sudden lift into the light. Papers talk about a Cinderella service in a hospital, a Cinderella sport, a Cinderella industry; fans talk about a Cinderella team that nobody fancied until it started winning. A Cinderella story is the whole arc: overlooked, then transformed. The word is almost always written with a capital C, like a name, even when it means a thing and not a girl. It is common in journalism and in talk about sport and public money; it is warmer and more story-like than neglected. Though actually, it does not promise a happy ending. Plenty of Cinderellas stay in the kitchen. And it is not only for women: a men’s club, a bus route, or a forgotten software tool can all be called a Cinderella.
